What are the chances of a meteorite that is large enough to penetrate the earth's atmosphere and cause an apocalyptic catastrophe on our dear blue planet is what I'm trying to determine today. through an admittedly short period of research, i have concluded that if such an object exists, scientists would be able to detect it and warn us long before it would reaches us.
Right...?
What if i told you that scientists have ALREADY discovered an object set on a collision course with earth called
"Apophis". you see, astronomers use the "Palermo Technical Impact Hazard Scale" to determine the probability of an astronomical object colliding with earth, and apophis, using this scale, went from a 1 in 45 chance to "ridiculously unlikely" which to say the least, is not very comforting.
Short answer: Unlikely
But you can be fairly sure that if a large meteorite was to hit earth and cause an end to humanity in your life time, you would know about it and given enough time to pack your bags and hop on our interplanetary spaceship, which i hope we finish building after we put an end to world hunger, solve the energy crises, and achieve world peace...
Yep. we would all be dead.
